Indian Tourists Reignite Sri Lanka’s Tourism Boom

A Surge in Numbers

Sri Lanka welcomed 198,235 tourists in August, reflecting a 20.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Indians made up the largest segment with 46,473 visitors, making India the top source market for Sri Lanka. The United Kingdom and Germany followed, contributing 17,764 and 12,500 tourists, respectively. Other significant markets included China, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, the Netherlands, and Japan.

The upward trend continued for the first eight months of 2025, during which Sri Lanka received a total of 1,566,523 foreign tourists. Out of these, Indian travelers accounted for a substantial 325,595 arrivals, underscoring India’s critical role in powering Sri Lankan tourism back to its pre-crisis levels. The influx is not far from the 200,359 arrivals recorded in August 2018, before the country faced economic and political challenges.
