Quick map of the seasons
West & South coasts (Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa): Best late November to April.
East & North coasts (Trincomalee/Nilaveli, Passikudah/Kalkudah, Arugam Bay, Jaffna): Best May to September.
Shoulders: April and September–October can be mixed but rewarding with fewer crowds and great value.
Month-by-month beach planner
January: South/west shine—Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Bentota. Calm seas; great for swimming and beginner surf at Weligama. Whale watching from Mirissa.
February: Peak south/west weather. Add turtle snorkel in Hikkaduwa or a river safari near Bentota. Sunset cruises from Galle/Mirissa.
March: Still excellent on the south/west. Visibility often good for diving/snorkeling. Early east-coast planning starts for May.
April: Warm and festive (Sinhala & Tamil New Year). Mixed showers possible, but mornings are often clear. Good value across both coasts.
May: East/north opens. Trincomalee/Nilaveli and Passikudah start their calm-water season. Arugam Bay surf switches on.
June: East/north at their best—Nilaveli for snorkeling (Pigeon Island), Passikudah for lagoon‑calm swimming, Arugam Bay for consistent surf.
July: Prime east/north. Expect glassy mornings and light winds on Trincomalee/Passikudah; strong surf at Arugam Bay.
August: East/north still superb. Peak for elephant “Gathering” near Minneriya—easy combo with Trinco beaches.
September: East remains good early in the month; shoulder perks elsewhere (lower prices, smaller crowds). Arugam Bay still has waves.
October: Rain can be widespread; still fine for short beach breaks plus culture and food. Consider one to two nights by the coast and more inland time.
November: Transition to south/west. Early weeks can be mixed; late November often brings sunnier seas to Galle/Unawatuna/Mirissa.
December: South/west beach season returns. Great for family holidays and whale watching from Mirissa (Dec–Mar).

How to combine beach + inland highlights (easy UAE weekaways)
Dec–Apr: 2 nights Galle/Unawatuna + 2 nights Mirissa + 2 nights Ella (tea country) or 1 night Yala/Uda Walawe (safari).
May–Sep: 3 nights Trincomalee/Nilaveli or Passikudah + 2 nights Sigiriya (Cultural Triangle) + 1–2 nights Kandy/Ella.
Short break idea (4–5 nights): Pick one coast based on the month, add a half-day safari and a tea estate tour.
Practical tips for beach days
Sea safety: Conditions change quickly; ask lifeguards or hotel staff before swimming. Heed red flags and local advice.
Best times: Mornings are typically calmer for swimming and snorkeling; winds pick up in the afternoon on many beaches.
Sun and reef care: Use reef-safe sunscreen, hydrate often, and avoid standing on coral. Jellyfish can appear after storms—check with your skipper/guide.
Getting around: Expressways speed up south-coast transfers (CMB to Galle ~2–2.5 hours). East-coast drives are longer; plan fewer hotel changes.
What to pack: Light clothing, swimwear, rash guard, water shoes for reefs, quick-dry towel, hat, sunglasses, and a light rain jacket year-round.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a guaranteed “dry month” everywhere? No. But with two monsoons, you can always pick a coast with better odds.
Can I swim in the monsoon? Sometimes, but currents may be strong and seas rough—choose sheltered bays and follow local guidance.
Are boats safe for whale trips? Choose licensed operators with life jackets and responsible wildlife practices; mornings are usually smoother.
