The Knuckles Conservation Forest — named for its jagged mountain peaks that resemble a clenched fist — is one of Sri Lanka's most spectacular and least visited natural areas. A UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve since 2010, it shelters over 200 bird species, endemic orchids, and elusive mammals like the purple-faced leaf monkey and fishing cat.
Trails range from gentle riverside walks suitable for first-time hikers to strenuous ridge-line routes that demand good fitness and a head for heights. The most popular single-day route takes you up through misty cloud forest to the Knuckles Peak (1,906 m), with sweeping views over the Cultural Triangle on one side and the hill country on the other. Multi-day treks camp overnight in traditional homestays in remote mountain villages where electricity only arrived in recent years.
Because the range sits at the convergence of the wet and dry zones, the vegetation changes dramatically as you hike — from thick wet evergreen jungle on the windward slopes to open grasslands and scrub on the leeward side. This biodiversity makes every hour on the trail feel like walking through a different country.
January to April is the driest and clearest period — perfect for ridge views.
Hire a registered local guide; trails are poorly marked and conditions change fast.
Multi-day treks require a permit from the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
The leech season runs roughly May–September — gaiters and salt sachets are your friends.
