Scenic Train Journey

The train journey from Kandy to Ella is consistently listed among the most scenic rail routes in the world — and the reality doesn't disappoint. For six hours you wind through the highlands of Sri Lanka's hill country, past waterfalls, tea estates, misty tunnels, and dramatic valleys, while the air grows cooler and the landscape increasingly spectacular.

The route climbs from Kandy (465 m) to the summit at Pattipola (1,892 m — the highest railway station in Sri Lanka) before descending through the tea country to the beloved backpacker town of Ella. Every half hour brings a new view: rice terraces, colonial-era viaducts, workers in the tea fields, children waving from village platforms.

The famous Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era stone viaduct near Ella station, has become one of the most photographed spots in Sri Lanka. Time your arrival (or stand between the Ella and Demodara stations at the right moment) to catch the train rolling across the bridge with the jungle canopy below — a shot that appears on almost every Sri Lanka travel blog on the internet.
