Ceylon tea — now branded simply as Sri Lanka tea — is one of the world's most recognised exports and a central part of the island's identity. The hill country around Nuwara Eliya, sitting at 1,800 metres above sea level, produces some of the finest high-grown tea on earth: light, golden, and delicately flavoured by the cool mountain air.
A tea plantation tour takes you into this landscape of extraordinary beauty — endless rows of manicured tea bushes rolling over hillsides, framed by eucalyptus windbreaks and the occasional waterfall tumbling down a cliff. You'll walk alongside Tamil tea pickers (who can harvest up to 30 kg of leaf per day) and learn how they identify the perfect two leaves and a bud.
The highlight is the factory visit. Ceylon tea goes through a complex process — withering, rolling, oxidising, drying, sorting — before it reaches your cup, and watching it happen on century-old machinery is genuinely fascinating. Every tour ends with a cupping session where you taste teas from different elevations and learn to appreciate the difference.
Morning tours offer the best light for photography across the estate.
The tea factory is noisiest and most active on weekday mornings — avoid weekends if you want the full experience.
Try the single-estate teas rather than blends — they show the terroir most clearly.
Nuwara Eliya is at 1,868 m — dress warmer than you think you need to.
